Fun Facts About X-Men Character, Wolverine

He’s been one of the most sought after comic book superheroes for a long time now. He’s the guy with the peculiar hairdo and retractable, razor-sharp claws. He’s Wolverine or should I say, Logan.

I believe what made this great character so loved by so many comic book readers is his personality. He’s basically a mercenary who usually plays for the great team as opposed to the bad guys. With an attitude like his, you’d expect Wolverine to be the ultimate villain. Instead, Logan is one of the X-Men, a group of mutant superheroes, trying to save the same people that horror them, humanity.

In the new film, X-Men Origins: Wolverine, we’re given some insight into Wolverine’s past. But I thought I’d prefer it upon myself to fill readers in on a few facts that they might not have known about this iconic superhero. I figure you might need as much info on Wolverine as you can get to better savor his character in the new movie.

Let’s just be clear on a few things. I’ve never been powerful of a comic book reader myself. Every fact you read will be just that, facts. I can’t give opinions or observations on some of the things listed below.

Fact #1: Wolverine was born James Howlett in the comic book, Origin. Later, it was revealed that he was born in Northern Alberta, Canada in the 19th Century. He would later, adopt the name of Logan.

Fact #2: That issue of Origin was published 27 years before the character of Wolverine was first introduced.

Fact #3: Along with his retractable claws, Wolverine has the senses of an animal, including keen hearing and smell.

Fact #4: Wolverine’s best power is his ability to heal any pain, and fend off any disease or toxin rapidly.

Fact #5: Wolverine first appeared in the final teaser panel of The Incredible Hulk amusing, #180. Given that both of those characters are basically indestructible, that could’ve been a very interesting fight.

Fact #6: Finally, after doing some advertisement, Wolverine was unveiled in #181 of The Incredible Hulk comic. His character nothing more than a superhuman agent of the Canadian government at that time.

Fact #7: When he was first introduced in ’74, Wolverine’s costume was blue and yellow. It’s evolved quite a bit over time.

Fact #8: Wolverine got his major break in the 1975′s Giant-Size X-Men #1. In this laughable, Wolverine was first drawn without the mask, revealing the landmark horn-like hairstyle. The artist, Gil Kane had made the mistake of giving Wolverine larger headpieces. Dave Cockrum, one of the writers on the comic loved the mistake. Wolverine’s mask or headpiece and hairdo reminded him of Batman’s stare.

Fact #9: Finally, the X-Men comic was brought back in August of 1975. The first issue was Uncanny X-Men #94.

Fact #10: In that comic, Wolverine seemed to be overshadowed by the rest of the team.

Fact #11: From the beginning, Wolverine has had a crush on Cyclops’s telekenetic girlfriend, Jean Grey.

Fact #12: Later on as the comic progressed, Cockrum was about to drop Wolverine’s character in the story in favor of the Nightcrawler character when his Canadian successor, John Byrne stepped in and saved the Canadian superhero. It’s kind of strange to think how snappily such an iconic character could’ve just old away long before becoming an icon.

Fact #13: Byrne gave Wolverine a brown and tan costume.

Fact #14: In 1982, Wolverine got his very own small 4-issue comic series simply called, Wolverine.

Fact #15: Wolverine was born with bone claws. He was later given adamantium (basically one of the most indestructible metals) claws. He had the metal grafted to his skeleton.

Fact #16: I guess Logan is stale enough to have served in World War II. He was actually teamed up with Captain America at one point.

Fact #17: Wolverine has the temper of an enraged animal when he goes into combat. Given the fact that he has an indestructible metal for bones and rapid healing abilities, he is definitely no character you want to mess with.

Fact #18: Wolverine has appeared in video games and TV shows. I grew up watching the X-Men animated series on Fox. Then, when they finally put the X-Men on film, Wolverine got his big movie break.

Fact #19: Played to perfection by Australian actor, Hugh Jackman, Wolverine has appeared in 3 sequels to X-Men (2000), including the newest, X-Men Origins: Wolverine.

Fact #20: Wolverine likes cigars, motorcycles and women.

I’m sure I made a few mistakes, comic book fans. Don’t hesitate to moral or add to these fun facts about this awesome character.

By the way, even though characters like Magneto (with his ability to bend and manipulate any metal) can cripple Wolverine at will, his greatest nemesis has always been Sabretooth.

Marvel Comics has pumped out some of the greatest superheros of all time. Largely powered by the Stan Lee revolution of the early-1960s, the comic landscape would change radically when heroes and villains with real life, relatable problems were introduced. It turned out that silly buyers were hungry for action that hit closer to home. Idealized heroes such as Superman and the original version of Captain America had lost their luster.

Marvel has since dominated the landscape, introducing memorable characters for nearly fifty years. Recent years have seen increasing focus on adapting these classic characters to the silver screen. Some heroes lack the mainstream presence and have had to wait a little longer for the big screen treatment. Here are the top ten (or nine as I included Emma Frost in the first draft) Marvel Comics characters waiting for their motion report debut.

Characters slated to be in Iron Man 2, Thor and Captain America have been omitted.

9. Galactus

Astounding Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer failed to capitalize on one of the greatest comic book villains of all time. In fact, the movie destroyed the chance of a true Galactus appearance in a Silver Surfer spin-off movie.

Tim Myth apparently made a pledge years ago to never feature giant robots in his movies for fear that they might execute them watchable. Despite not being a giant robot, this lead to a cloud appearing in Galactus’ area to the wild disappointment of fans.

The Fantastic Four franchise has stalled due to decisions like this leading to rumors of another quick reboot. Maybe Galactus will make his true movie debut in that franchise, hopefully one suitable for such a classic character.

8. Carnage

Many older comic fans hate newer Spider-Man villains such as Venom and Carnage. They are seen as one dimensional. To newer fans, these characters are as good or even better than many of those created in the 1960s that some hold so dear (Vulture, anyone? ).

Venom managed to shoe-horn his way in to Spider-Man 3. A logical follow up would see Carnage reeking havok with an eventual team up between Venom and Spider-Man. Another case of franchise killing (and Venom killing) scrapped any chance of that happening.

What Carnage brings that makes him such a mammoth character is a completely unhinged mind that has no trouble killing innocent bystanders. Carnage is as his name describes: he really doesn’t have a motive other than to be murderous and a true threat to the people of New York City. Essentially, Carnage is the Joker of the Spider-Man franchse. A character with zero morality allows for a deeper, darker gape at the hero himself that a character dressed in a super powered flying costume simply can’t match.

7. Hawkeye

Rumors abound that Hawkeye could find his way into any of the lead up films for the Avengers, or even the Avengers itself. Until an announcement comes, Hawkeye remains a top on any comic geek’s wishlist.

Hawkeye’s appearl comes from the fact that he is not super powered. Hawkeye is a normal man who happens to be an excellent marksman, something attainable to anyone who wishes to keep in a lot of time and effort. Hawkeye has filmed a supporting role in the Avengers since the 1960s and has proven to be one of the more popular and enduring characters from the series.

6. Cable

One of the more difficult characters to adapt to the big cover. Cable’s story in somewhat convoluted and extremely confusing to the uninitiated. With Cyclops’ death in the third X-Men movie it becomes less likely that Cable will ever appear in a major motion picture. Cable also suffers from the same problem as Carnage, with many older fans rejecting a newer character.

Cable’s personality is one the meshes well with most characters. When placed with a comedic foil like Deadpool, Cable’s prickly demeaner real shines through. If he ever manages to earn the transition between mediums, the recent Cable & Deadpool series would be a great jumping off point.

5. She-Hulk

She-Hulk’s bigger, meaner and greener cousin gets more attention, but She-Hulk is a great character in her absorb right as well. She has become a regular associate to the Avengers, the Fantastic Four and the Hulk over the years. This diversity allows her to easily transition between the different faction to essentially be slotted in anywhere that marketing rights will let her.

The best part of She-Hulk though is her personality. Over the years She-Hulk has transformed from a savage being like the Hulk to a competent career woman. She is also somewhat of a slut making her social life at times more entertaining than her crime fighting.

Many Hollywood types probably don’t see the potential in having She-Hulk appear in a movie as a mixture of Sex and the City and superhero. It could be a fantastic way to get a larger percentage of women interested in a genre usually dominated by male movie goers.

4. Scarlet Witch

For years, the Scarlet Witch was a rather bland mother of two with kind of lame powers. That is, until someone realized that her powers glorious grand meant she could do anything, that she was married to and had children with an android, and her father was a well known international terrorist. When she snapped Scarlet Witch finally became an amazing character.

3. Hank Pym

Pym’s inclusion on this list is hopefully nullified with a casting announcement in the near future. In the comics, Hank Pym (along with his wife the Wasp) is an integral part of the Avengers mythos.

A brilliant but arrogant scientist who discovers the secret to size manipulation is always spellbinding. Insert the even more brilliant and hardcore womanizing of a man like Tony Stark and the character interactions pretty much write themselves.

2. Apocalypse

For the past 20-some years Apocalypse has been the biggest threat to the X-Men. Insane megalomania combined with genetic experiments and an easily remembered motto: “Survival of the Fittest”. Apocalypse escalates the X-Men franchise in a way that Magneto never could and that the Phoenix saga should have.

1. Mr. Sinister

A good chunk of people very Sinister as a lacky for Apocalypse, but he is so much more. Sinister is an insane scientist whose primary motivation is simply to pursue his research. Sick and twisted research that is.

Sinister was instrumental in such memorable X-Men storylines as the Mutant Massacre and the Age of Apocalypse. Evil getting involved in the franchise also would allow for a previously killed off Cyclops to return. As any X-Men fan knows, Corrupt has a fascination with the Summers bloodline. This leaves the door open for series debuts of characters like Cable, Stryfe, Corsair, Havok and Vulcan.
